Frequently Asked Questions
DNS
Q: What is a Top Level Domain?
A: A Top Level Domain (TLD) name, e.g. .com or .dk, is the last component of a domain name. There are two different types of TLDs: Generic and National. A Generic TLD (.com, .org., edu .net) describes the purpose of the organization or entity to which the domain name is registered. Generic TLDs do not differentiate between locations. A National TLD (e.g. .dk) specifies the country or territory of the registered domain name owner. More details on domain name structure can be found at InterNIC.
Q: What about Trademarks?
A: Generic... InterNIC has taken a hands-off approach to handling prior and pending trademark names when registering new domain names. In most trademark cases, an infringement can take place with words that sound similar, are spelled slightly differently, etc. With InterNIC you can have a trademarked name in your domain and they will register it to you without doing any search. But, and that's a big but, they will let the courts decide if your domain name could belong to another company/user. Not very good news if you spend lots of time and energy promoting your domain name, only to have someone come out of the woodwork and try to take it. There are several court cases pending that could change how InterNIC awards domains. For more details, refer to InterNIC's domain name dispute policy. National... Trademark dispute policies vary depending on the country or territory. In most cases, the registrant is responsible for recognizing and following trademark laws. All trademark disputes should be directed to the national registry where the domain is registered. Further information and contacts can be found using the links provided to each national registry (click on flag).
Q: I'm moving my domain to Graphic Traffic. How can I prevent disruption of service for my visitors?
A: It usually takes 24-72 hours for the new address to update around the globe after InterNIC has made the changes to your domain address. Both your old site and new site will be receiving traffic during the transition time. Our suggestion is that you set up your new site as soon as possible using the temporary url we give you. Keep your old site active during the transition.
